Epic winter in South Hemisphere
From July to September it has been epic season for me in Southern hemisphere.
Sometime ago I decided step by step to acomplish one of my dreams to become a heliski guide. So I decided to take a course on New Zealand. The course took place in Queenstown and was guided by guys from Alpine heliski company.
It was not a random choice to go to New Zealand, in my thoughts were still the possibility to be accepted to the 4*star event, from the freeride world qualifier circle, which takes place every year in New Zealand and is the highest ranked competition in this freeride serie.
The time I spent with the guys from Alpine heliski was very professional, based on ,,safety first”. We practised a load of exercises in the backcountry, avalanche safety, snow tests, behaviour around and in the helicopter and handling with the clients.
After this bunch of knowledge I left to South America for some time, as always I headed to Corralco in the South of Chile.
Again I met lovely people, and I spent amazing time over there, skiing some beautiful lines between monkey puzzle trees. This season was very strong, regarding the snowfall, which allowed me to ski places I never skied before.
Apart from this, I was very lucky, because they offered me a practice in Heliguiding, provided by the local backcountry company Sled Chile. So after I accomplished the course, I had a chance to guide people on my own for the very first time.
During the time in Chile I realized being accepted to the freeride event on New Zealand 🇳🇿 and I did not hesitate.
I landed at the beginning of September in Queenstown and I went directly from the airport to the mountain to check the face because the contest was the next day. The event took place in Alta Chutes in Remarkables, as every year.
I chose an easy line, I prefered to gain the points, and not risk the fall, because the level was so high. Finally I was satisfied with the chute I made and with the 7th place as well.
I was definitely so stoked to be a part of such a professional contest! 🎿
